“English Weather craft a heartwarming melody that embraces the meaning of unconditional love.”
Folk-Rock fourpiece English Weather, made up of singer-songwriter duo Jack March and Aidan Petrie, drummer Paddy Long and bassist/producer Tom Campbell have been expanding their sound and broadening their musical horizons with their new releases. Their latest single, Grey & Old, brings love to life through mesmerising harmonies.
An acoustic intro leads Grey & Old, introducing an inviting hook. Once the harmonies set in, it becomes apparent that each line of a similar length ascends in pitch until the last of each verse, forming this warm pattern made familiar by repetition.
“Grey & Old is a harmonic ode to love and family, in its most pure, intimate form.” – English Weather
A notable part of Grey & Old is the way Jack and Aidan intertwine their vocals, mirroring each other not just sonically, but also emotionally. While the tone is consistently mellow, a lower and higher range is still showcased, important for this emotional delivery.
Eloquent rhymes and earnest expression allows Grey & Old to be communicated like poetry. In lines like Love that knows no victory and Love that no one else can see, this concept of love is personified. Its abstract nature is reduced to emphasise its importance in reality. The melody reflects unconditional love, having been dedicated to Jack’s grandfather, and sparks appreciation of loved ones for listeners.
