“Unyoke include everything you want to hear in a debut single; intriguing lyricism, a melody that absorbs you and originality.
Belgium-based rock band Unyoke are establishing themselves in 2024 with their debut album, but first they opened with debut single ‘Sing Alone’. This melody shows how Unyoke are already not afraid to go against the norm, experimenting vocally, instrumentally and melodically – and then developing the brilliant sounds they make.
After drawing us in with the instrumental, Unyoke begin strong lyrically: ‘It’s just another day in this materialistic space and time means nothing when I stay.’ There’s also a unique flair to the vocals that unveils the feelings within the lyrics, whilst a subtle yet evocative instrumental builds tension to capture the listener’s attention and pave the way for the chorus.
There’s something in the melody which reflects how ‘Sing Alone’ is an independent anthem. This independent approach is confirmed by the lyrics ‘I’m the bad guy for deciding to do something for myself’. Here the musicians really delve deep into this sense of authenticity, allowing us to consider our own experience regarding this topic. Speaking on the meaning behind ‘Sing Alone’, the band say, “The song talks about self evolution in a positive way. About embracing solitude.”
A powerful instrumental shows off its technique before the vocals return with even more strength in them. By the end it feels like we’ve just finished watching a great film, or have closed a captivating book, due to the enlightening influence ‘Sing Alone’ has on us.
