Jim Sanders’ presents us with his six track EP ‘Always Drunk’ – coalescing his cohesive instrumentals with his emotive vocal melodies.
‘La Nuit’, the opening track, has a great elegance to it. The acoustic arrangement brings about this atmosphere, created by a melancholically deep tonality in the lower notes that somehow makes melancholia sound so enamouring.
In the following melody ‘Always Drunk’, we are introduced to Sanders’ vocals that have a classic, textured resonance. He has admirable control over his voice, conducting its cadence to reflect the flow of the instrumental. Lyrically, the song is open and honest; “Please believe me when I say I’m trying to do better.”
Delicate guitar strings and the abstract concept of memory/reminiscence is possessed by ‘She used to love me a lot’ – the latter hinted at in the title. It commences quietly and becomes richer as the melody progresses, yet still showcases this delicate essence. ‘Sunday’ compliments its predecessor with a calming quality. The delivery of the lyrics is smoothly executed, and the overall encapsulation of the song feels timeless.
Jim Sanders’ final song ‘The Fool’ is represented both as a studio version and a live version. It consists of this natural grace and charm, and these two qualities work together to enhance the allure of the instrumental piece.
