“Expressing her feelings so eloquently, ‘Little Thoughts’ by Jenna May has been one of my favourite songs lyrically to review. “
Exploring the hard sentiment of realising a friendship may be outgrown, Boston-based indie singer-songwriter Jenna May brings ‘Little Thoughts’ to our attention. Whether you relate or not, the story is a captivating one to follow.
There’s such a cool contrast of the fast tempo of the intro and its melancholic undertones. Already ‘Little thoughts’ feels warm and inviting, intimate and personal. And this is emphasised when the vocals come into play. Jenna May asks the rhetorical question “But when do we run out of things in common?”, anticipating the downfall of the friendship. She uses anecdotes to their full potential, allowing the listener to become immersed in the vulnerable confession of these ‘Little Thoughts’.
‘Am I second, second, second?’ and ‘Did you read my message, message, message?” sings Jenna May, repeating what causes the most pain. Then there’s something so delicate about the enunciation of the notes in the chorus, encapsulating the mood of knowing of but not wanting to accept this simmering friendship.
“”Little Thoughts” is a song I wrote about a close friendship that I feared was reaching its end. Writing this song helped me express my feelings to that friend, and now I’m able to listen to it knowing that it helped my friendship to heal,” disclosed Jenna May.
The different layers of vocals as the song comes to a close cements the heart break that arises in the atmosphere. There’s ultimately no anger of bitterness within the melody, but rather a mournful reminiscence and a care for the friend that seems no matter where the friendship leads, will always remain.
