‘Lacrime di Carta’ has an elegant yet powerful atmosphere. Was there something in particular that inspired you to compose it?
Davide: I can say that the genesis of this piece happened right after a rather strong and delicate event, mainly for whom this piece is dedicated more than for me. It all stemmed from assisting a great person, not that my friend, following a sudden and quite rare illness during a good time spent together. It was moments of pure worry and sorrow that the next morning led me to write this piece almost automatically, as if my mind had to dispose and decipher all that mix I felt during that night. So I want this fragment of music to act as a good luck charm so that nothing like that can happen to her again.
As an artist, what is your favourite thing about releasing music to the world?
Davide: A Few days ago, I was discussing about that with two of my friends while visiting Rome and we all ended up with the same opinion. The desire of expressing something that before was only inside you and then became art is always salvific and beautiful for me, and the consequence of getting heard from someone and having some sort collective empathy with messages of appreciation or knowing that my music was helpful to pass delicate moments means the world to me. I feel very grateful.
What was the best part of recording ‘Lacrime di Carta’?
Davide: I think that One of the most interesting main cues in my opinion was the desire to want to give even more emphasis to the concept of fragility precisely, to want to make it transpire in gestures that could in some way imitate it. So during the writing and the performance I tried to make them such through the almost percussive figuration of a single note in the background that sometimes does not follow an extremely precise rhythmic pattern, using small “hesitations” that I thought could make it best.
How does ‘Lacrime di Carta’ differ from your other projects?
Davide: I could identify two points where this song differs. The first is that it is music that I dedicate for the first time to a person, who with great courage faced a truly incredible situation, and I feel happy to have assisted in some way. The second point concerns the human message contained within, which is that in my opinion everyone has their own way of getting back up stronger than before after a trying experience, and I believe that music can be a fundamental tool for many. I have always been convinced that behind every obstacle there is a springboard to a new version of ourselves. The question is in knowing how to spot it. We cannot constantly suffer the adversities of life and be overwhelmed by them. As people, we have the right and the duty to aspire to something more, to be able to turn every obstacle into an opportunity to change, to improve ourselves and to get to know ourselves better every day. Music can help us to develop our personal resilience and push us towards new goals that, until now, we had never considered.
Do you have any tips for musicians navigating the music industry?
Davide: Just be yourself, don’t you dare bow to ridiculous demands from labels that will ask you to change your art so that it looks more ‘commercial’ in order to fit better into playlists. Trust fully in what you do and the rest will come accordingly, I am truly convinced of that.
Your latest release is objectively very emotive. What key emotions were intended to be displayed on ‘Lacrime di Carta’?
Davide: I would mainly define it as a kind of key that can somehow trigger in ourselves the mechanism of finding courage, which sometimes seems dormant or covered by a blanket of fears and insecurities, because we all have frailties, and I think we have to have the courage to be fragile as human beings, contrary to what society suggests, a hymn to resilience. For me, there is always a way to solve anything if really trust in ourselves.
Do you have big plans for 2024?
Davide: I can consider myself really lucky in this regard, great adventures will follow, which I hope will lead me to play around Italy and Europe together with great friends. I am also currently working on some new music, including many international collaborations with composers Edoardo Gastaldi (who is also a dear friend), Marko Zoric, Fabrizio Brugnera and Doug Thomas, whom I thank so much for the opportunity to be creating beautiful music together.
