How are you feeling about your single ‘Overboard’ being released soon?
Noel Mittman: “Quite honestly, my new single is again something very exciting. „Overboard“ is now my eight single with my project Luxergo, but it’s actually my first piano track I´ve ever released after only releasing electronic music. I have the feeling that this is a next step in my musical trip with a new door full of new opportunities. My plan for the future is to do a mix of Piano and electronic music.”
‘Overboard’ has a truly beautiful arrangement of notes. What was the process like producing it?
Noel Mittman: “Most of the time, there are two ways I compose music. Sometimes I have something particular in mind, which I later try to play on a synth or piano for instance. Or the other way is just to play and jam a bit without a force, until I play all of the sudden something that I find interesting. No matter what way I choose, after that I just experiment with the melody I just composed. For example I change specific notes or chords, add new layers or change the bpm. That’s how I always continue with a small melody. „Overboard“ was composed by just jamming. In the process I changed a lot of things in the song. It was also something completely new to me because I´ve recorded or produced a piano track before. Producing electronic music is easier in my opinion, maybe also because I have more practice there. You can add thousands of layers for the purpose of making something big. It’s not unusual to have 70 or more tracks in your DAW for one track. But with a piano track you have only 2-4 tracks or something like that. You have to think completely differently about how to make it sound big. I recorded this track now with a simple piano plugin from Spitfire labs. For the future I have the plan to record a grand piano myself. I already studied several stereo microphone techniques for recording piano.”
You started releasing singles on Spotify in 2023. What has life been like in the music industry so far?
Noel Mittman: “I can remember very well when I released my first single last summer. And planning as well. Everything was completely new and had to be organised. It was really exciting and a very special feeling when I uploaded „Come to my basement“, which was my first single, through my Distributor. I think this became later more and more routine. Something normal. And you learn from the mistakes of your previous releases more and more. Another thing is the Spotify algorithm, which is almost a scientific investigation. I´m still exploring. But it gets easier with every release. I´m currently releasing something every four weeks to trigger the algorithm. From time to time, I can see a small growth.”
How did you get into making music? And what drew you to your genre?
Noel Mittman: “Indeed I started musically completely different in comparison to now. I started to play guitar when I was six. When I was around 13-15 years old, I had the plan to form a rock band. I also learned to play bass and drums during this time. I was more into music like Green Day or Foo Fighters. Electronic music was in this time more indeed something like persona non grata. But when I was around 17 years old, the synthesizer appeared more and more in my music. And guitar or drums were gone more and more, so all of the sudden my music became pure electronic music.”
Do you have any significant sources of inspiration for your music?
Noel Mittman: “That’s hard to say. I think very important, no matter what kind of art you are doing, is to go out and watch the environment around you. Exploring new countries and cultures. Be open to everything around you.”
What hobbies do you enjoy besides making music?
Noel Mittman: “Quite honestly, there is indeed not that much besides music. That’s really something that fills my day. And besides that, I think it’s the same as I said before: Going outside and exploring new possibilities.”
Is there a specific song or album you’ve had on repeat lately?
Noel Mittman: “My current music library is full of different musical directions. I think it’s of course really important to listen to many different genres and also especially to genres that are completely different to the music that you are doing. That´s a good way to create something unique. I listen to several electronic and ambient artists, but also a lot of classical music. I especially like russian composers like Rachmaninov or Prokofiev and also french composers like Debussy. And also newer composers like Ryuichi Sakamoto.”
