Edoardo Gastaldi And Fred Gump Take Us To A Land of Memories In ‘L’Altalena Dei Ricordi’

“Fred Gump and Edoardo Gastaldi breathe so much life and entity into ‘L’Altalena Dei Ricordi’

Edoardo Gastaldi never fails to impress with his enchanting neoclassical melodies, and this year he continues the flow with his second 2024 single ‘L’Atalena Dei Ricordi’, in which he collaborates with fellow composer Fred Gump. The song liberates so many meaningful sounds; and so there’s lots to uncover here.

The title ‘L’Altalena Dei Ricordi’ translates to ‘The Swell Of Memories’ (albeit sounding much more poetic in Italian) and we can see how this theme plays out in the instrumental. Opening with piano notes that feel as though they mirror the cover art, representing hauntingly yet beautifully cold weather, we begin to get an insight to structure of the melody.

Transcending from a slightly melancholy feel in the beginning to a high spirited bliss, ‘L’Altalena Dei Ricordi’ soon traverses across these two contrasts. Perhaps the swell of memories dominates the mind at first, but soon a promising future blossoms – yet not without the troubles of the past. This is a very realistic portrayal of how our minds work, battling with the past, present and future for what seems like a perpetual time.

Fred Gump delves into the meaning; “The images that seal our past, brought back to our memory, recreate reality. This time, we tried to bring to light this reality with our music.”

Edoardo Gastaldi spoke on the musical experience; “As Fred asked me to collaborate, it seemed quite ambitious and not smoothly feasible for me to match his cinematic-driven style with my much softer approach. Later on, as soon as I listened to his draft idea, I completely changed my mind. He created enough space for me to work in total comfort. His versatility surprised me and I honestly think the result sounded unique.”

As for the instrumental and how this melancholy past and high spirited bliss is contrasted, Gastaldi and Gump use the technique of expressing deeper notes and higher notes to show this, and also somehow get these to sync with one another gracefully. The melody ends with a balance of the atmospheres, potentially signalling peace. But to truly understand the enlightening experience of these sounds, I would highly encourage you to have a listen.’
